Final Standings, Waltham CC Pat Arena Memorial Open 2019 – 10-18-2019 – 11-15-2019

Fellow Waltham CC players,

Thanks to everyone who played in the 2019 Pat Arena Memorial Open over the past five weeks.  Given the challenge in attending week after week consistently,  we appreciate the sportsmanship of all those players who showed up almost as unanimously on Week 5 as on Week 1.

The Invitational Championship is currently in a state of abeyance as the final game to decide the title, between Steve Winer and Bryan Hu, is delayed.  We will get word out as soon as we have a winner.

The final results are below my signature.  We look forward to having greater numbers of players at next year’s Pat Arena Open.  Have a great Thanksgiving and we’ll see you on the other side for the 2019 Quick Championship.

Final Results, Waltham CC BLITZ Championship 2019 – 07-19-2019 – 07-26-2019

Fellow Waltham CC BLITZ players,

This was an incredibly busy weekend for me, and one enormous success was to have blasted through prior attendance records at the Waltham CC Blitz Championship – over 30 PLAYERS! Thanks in abundance to all the Blitz players who came, especially the newer and up-and-coming ones. This will be a memorable event for weeks to come.

Steve Winer recaptured his prior title of BLITZ CHAMPION.

We welcomed several new players. Among them was top player Bryan Hu, who has moved to New England from AZ and showed his stuff by taking 2nd Place with only one Point behind Steve. Bryan will be joining us for the Invitational Championship in the fall.

Winners:

1st: Steve Winer, WALTHAM CC 2019 BLITZ CHAMPION
2nd: Bryan Hu
3rd (tied): Alan Song, Brandon Dante Wu
U1800: Dattasai Kilari
U1400: Stephen Desouza

Daily Prize, Night 1: IM Denys Shmelov
Daily Prize, Night 2 (tied): Andrew Su, Anand Nair

We look forward to getting everyone back next year, but in the meantime let us turn out in droves for the Pat Arena Memorial Open in October and November. See you over the board.

Final Standings, Concord-Carlisle April Scholastic Ladder – 04-07-2019

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Scholastic players,

We wrapped up the 2018-2019 Scholastic season at Concord-Carlisle Chess Club with our 3rd Ladder. The number of players who participated went up to 22 players, up from 14 players in February. Thanks in abundance to David West of Carlisle who helped Concord-Carlisle Chess Club institute the Ladder Format for the first time anywhere in my tenure as TD. After a rather bumpy start, it has emerged a great success.

Special recognition to my two Newton students Max Zuckernik and Erik Shin who both got 2 Points. Although they did not place, they nonetheless saw both of their Ratings go up. I am proud of these two as representatives of our Newton chess classes at F.A. Day Middle School.

Waltham SPRINGTIME Ladder – 03-22-2019

Fellow Waltham CC Players,

On my father’s 87th brithday, I celebrated with all my friends at Waltham Chess Club with the launching of the first ever Waltham Chess Club LADDER! It was awesome to have 17 players give the Ladder Format a try, and I received rave reviews for it. On this occasion, we made this an Unrated event to try it out. Should this format prove popular enough to elevate it, we’ll do some Rated events down the road. We may also put Unrated Ladders on our Pizza Nights.

The best part of the Ladder is that players are paired on a rolling basis, instead of having to wait until all games are finished before being re-paired. Additionally, because games can finish quickly, players can get to play far more than 4 games, as many as 8 in some cases. Therefore, there’s time for lots of chess for everyone ongoing.

We welcomed a new player Sean Barkowsky and hope he will join us on our future Unrated nights.
