Final Standings, Waltham CC 2018 QUICK CHAMPIONSHIP – 12-07-2018 – 12-14-2018

Fellow Waltham CC players,

I couldn’t be happier – am in a state of exultation in fact as I write this – at far we have come as a Club in the Hobbs Brook Management cafeteria. Not only is the cafeteria light and bright for the first time in over a decade, but the decor has been remodeled with new tables and chairs. (You can see before and after in these photos.) Certainly they took some getting used to, but I think our appreciation of the new environment will grow over time. (That is, as long as we don’t get plunged into darkness again.)

Thanks to the 20 players who joined us at this very special time for Waltham CC to square off in the 2nd annual Quick Championship. We’ll be happier still in our new setting without the pervasive paint fumes, but I am breath-taken at the difference a new color scheme makes.

I would like to welcome back to our midst Agustin Garcia, who visited us many years ago and now came back to take 2nd place in the Championship. A shout-out also to Ross Eldridge and Prachi Dayal, the U1800 and U1400 winners.

But finally let me congratulate the reigning WALTHAM CC 2018 QUICK CHAMPION, IM Denys Shmelov.

Winners:

1st: IM Denys Shmelov
2nd: Agustin Garcia
U1800: Ross Eldridge
U1400: Prachi Dayal
Daily Prizes: Alan Song, Vitaliy Ryabinin, Ames Abbot, Albeto Villasis

We’ll see you next Friday as we close out 2018 with the Christmas Party and Bughouse Tournament. Bring LOTS OF FOOD & DRINK!

Final Standings, Waltham CC 2018 Pat Arena Memorial Open – 10-19-2018 – 11-16-2018

Fellow Waltham CC players,

This is my opportunity to thank all the players who have supported Waltham CC faithfully over its 48 years. The 2018 annual Open, lined up with the Invitational Championship, was dedicated this year in memory of Pasquale “Pat” Arena, the founder of Waltham Chess Club in the 1970s. This is his obituary published at the Joyce Funeral Home website:

“Mr. Pasquale W. ‘Pat’ Arena, of Waltham, died Wednesday September 12, 2018 in Southern New Hampshire Medical Center. He was 92.

Pat was born in Framingham on April 1, 1926, a son of the late Giovanni and Jennie (Infererre) Arena, and moved to Waltham with his family as a child. He grew up in Waltham surrounded by a large family and developed a love . . . and a keen talent . . . for drawing in grade school. His career composition for Miss Turner’s eighth grade class at South Junior High School was ‘Cartoonist’.

During World War II Pat joined the United States Navy and after the war enrolled at New England School of Art, graduating in 1949. He later earned an associate’s degree in business management from Northeastern University. Until his retirement he worked for more than forty years for the Raytheon Company as a lithographer and artist/illustrator and cartoonist.

Pat’s cartoons first appeared in Navy publications and over the decades in newspapers locally and around the country. While he worked at Raytheon he also taught for twenty-seven years at the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln. He later taught at schools in Wellesley, Weston and in Wayland.

Pat also became the art director of the Waltham Museum and was a frequent lecturer at the Waltham Public Library. He had a talent for playing the piano and a passion for playing chess. He became one of the founders of the Waltham Chess Club.

His favorite sports team was the Boston Celtics and he cherished their golden era when Johnny Most gave colorful and illustrative play by play on the radio. Fall was also special when he took the grandkids on the annual apple picking journey.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth M. (Uberti) Arena; his children, Patricia Arena of Weston, Jeanne Melnick (Paul) of Center Harbor, New Hampshire, Carolyn Harms (Craig) of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Joseph Arena (Maureen) of Hudson, New Hampshire, James Arena of Framingham and Thomas Arena (Renée) of Waltham; his grandchildren, Daniel, David, Brandon, Garrett, Rebecca, Brianna, Joseph and Justin; his great-grandchild, Brayden; his siblings, Anthonino Arena of Waltham, Grace Rooney of Natick, Rose Clasby of Foxboro, Mary Vallerand of Waltham, Joseph Arena of Florida, James Arena of Florida and Nickolas Arena of Southbridge and many nieces and nephews.

He was also the father of the late John Arena and brother of the late Orazzio, John and Albert Arena.

Family and friends will honor and remember Pat’s life by gathering for calling hours in The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main Street (Rte. 20), Waltham on Monday, September 17th from 4 to 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning before leaving in procession to Saint Jude Church, 147 Main Street, Waltham where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham.

Memorial donations may be made to The Waltham Museum, 25 Lexington Street, Waltham, MA 02452.”

Thanks to Pat’s son Joe Arena and to Ed Herbert and Lou Mercuri who joined us for a Club tribute to Pat on 10/12/18, and who donated some memorabilia from Pat’s original days with the Club at the Waltham Public Library.

And thanks to the 21 players who made the Open a big success:

Winners:

1st Place: Todd Chase

2nd-3rd Place (tied): Yuriy Zhaurov, Ilya Rozonoyer

Under 1800 (tied): Daniel Korbacher, Benjamin Yin, Prachi Dayal

Under 1400: Bernhard Paul

As of this writing the Championship itself is incomplete because two games have to be made up.

We look forward to next year’s Pat Arena Memorial Open and will continue with this tradition.

Final Standings. Concord-Carlisle Scholastic Ladder – 12-02-2018

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Scholastic players,

Thanks to the 24 Scholastic players from Concord and nearby who came to one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had as a TD. This was the first ever Ladder tournament organized by Concord-Carlisle and the first one I have ever overseen as a TD. It was a challenging experience for me, and likely the players as well, because I did not have all the tools I needed at my disposal to handle all the logistics, but now that I know what I need, I’ll come much better prepared next time.

Special thanks to David West for suggesting the ladder format and working with Mattan Kamon to bring it to Concord-Carlisle Chess Club. Even though the logistics need somewhat different handling to go smoother and faster, this was an innovative new event that I definitely look forward to running again.

Winners:

Ladder:

1st – Arnaud Kohler

2nd – Dhairya Mehta

3rd – Ariel Zhou

Medals: Andrey Kalashnikov, Raeann Zhou, Bohan Wang

Watch your e-mails for the announcement of our next tournament. Have a great holiday season and see you over the board.

Final Standings Concord-Carlisle October Scholastic G/30 d5 – 10-14-2018

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Chess players,

For our inaugural 2018-2019 Scholastic tournament at our new location of Concord-Carlisle High School, we successfully fielded a squad of 33 players. This high number of players was enough to allow us to field an unplanned separate Section: U400. All qualifying players were given the option to transfer into this new Section, and eight chose to help create it.

The new location presented a few challenges with both space and timing, but overall appeared to work very well. It was an attractive site with plenty of space nearby the playing room both inside and outside the library.

Four of my students from Newton Community Education chess classes – Toby Harrison, Jacob Rubin, Max Zuckernik, and Erik Shin – were among the players, and Toby won first prize. I am pleased that NCE was so amply represented.

The final Standings are below my signature.  Photos are on the Bay State Chess Kings Facebook Group page, which I hope all of you will join.

Final Standings, Waltham CC Free Wild Card #50! – 10-05-2018

Fellow Waltham CC players,
In my nearly 10 years as Waltham TD to date, I have overseen 50 Wild Cards, and we celebrated the 50th this past Friday. Happily it was well attended by a big group who were hungry and enthusiastic enough to devour at least ten different snacks the whole night. Oh yes, they played some chess too.
Early in the evening we received a brief visit from Joe Arena, son of the recently deceased Pat Arena, with his own son. Unfortunately he did not stay long enough for me to get to meet him, and I hope he will return over the next five weeks as we honor his father during the Pat Arena Memorial Open.
Winners:
1st-2nd-3rd Place (tied): Alan Song, Yuriy Zhaurov, Anand Nair
U1400 (tied): Bernhard Paul, Steve Desouza
Full standings are below my signature.  Photographs are on my Facebook page.
Next Friday 10/12 begins the Waltham CC 2018 Club Championship & Pat Arena Memorial Open. The competitors are Steve Winer (a past Champion returning to try to regain his title), Suraj Ramanthan, Jerry Li, Karthik Padmanabhan, Ross Eldridge, and Alexander Meng. We have several new competitors in this field, and it will be a fascinating competition to watch.
See you next Friday for the launch of the big event.
