Final Standings, Concord-Carlisle December Scholastic Ladder – 12-14-2019

Concord-Carlisle December Scholastic Ladder #5 – 12-14-2019

Bay State Chess Kings Facebook Group

Fellow Concord-Carlisle players,

We did a much better job advertising this Ladder event than the last one, and it paid off! Thanks to the 19 players who played enthusiastically and with excellent sportsmanship in this Ladder. It has taken about a year for me to get this format down successfully, and I am happy to say this was a smooth-running event with excellent participation. Thanks to David West for his exemplary help in getting this together. (A mini shout-out also to the custodian Cameron for assisting me with break-down at the end.)

I was pleased to have two of my students, Ziv Dudnik (a repeat from last month) and Antonio Feng join us from my class in Newton. Both of them will be on my Teams at the Winter Team Challenge in January.

We had an older new player, Uri Netzer, join us for his first tournament. Apparently he has some skill that needs to apply itself in future tournaments, because he went 3.5-0.5 and will (eventually) take home the 3rd Place Points Trophy.

Winners:

Ladder:

1st: Jayden Wu
2nd: Brandon Li
3rd: Gentry Thatcher

Points:

1st-2nd (tied): Stanley Yu, Yiheng Liu
3rd: Uri Netzer

Our next Ladder Tournament will be on LEAP DAY! 2/29/2020. See you over the board and have a great holiday.

Final Standings, Concord-Carlisle April Scholastic Ladder – 04-07-2019

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Scholastic players,

We wrapped up the 2018-2019 Scholastic season at Concord-Carlisle Chess Club with our 3rd Ladder. The number of players who participated went up to 22 players, up from 14 players in February. Thanks in abundance to David West of Carlisle who helped Concord-Carlisle Chess Club institute the Ladder Format for the first time anywhere in my tenure as TD. After a rather bumpy start, it has emerged a great success.

Special recognition to my two Newton students Max Zuckernik and Erik Shin who both got 2 Points. Although they did not place, they nonetheless saw both of their Ratings go up. I am proud of these two as representatives of our Newton chess classes at F.A. Day Middle School.

Waltham SPRINGTIME Ladder – 03-22-2019

Fellow Waltham CC Players,

On my father’s 87th brithday, I celebrated with all my friends at Waltham Chess Club with the launching of the first ever Waltham Chess Club LADDER! It was awesome to have 17 players give the Ladder Format a try, and I received rave reviews for it. On this occasion, we made this an Unrated event to try it out. Should this format prove popular enough to elevate it, we’ll do some Rated events down the road. We may also put Unrated Ladders on our Pizza Nights.

The best part of the Ladder is that players are paired on a rolling basis, instead of having to wait until all games are finished before being re-paired. Additionally, because games can finish quickly, players can get to play far more than 4 games, as many as 8 in some cases. Therefore, there’s time for lots of chess for everyone ongoing.

We welcomed a new player Sean Barkowsky and hope he will join us on our future Unrated nights.

Winners:

Ladder:

1st Place: Anand Nair
2nd Place: Dattasai Kilari
3rd Place: Daniel Korbacher

Point Score:

1st Place: Stephen Desouza
2nd – 3rd Places (tied): Nagendranath Natti, Sean Barkowsky

LADDER is awesome! See you for the next (likely Memorial Day weekend).

Final Standings. Concord-Carlisle Scholastic Ladder – 12-02-2018

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Scholastic players,

Thanks to the 24 Scholastic players from Concord and nearby who came to one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had as a TD. This was the first ever Ladder tournament organized by Concord-Carlisle and the first one I have ever overseen as a TD. It was a challenging experience for me, and likely the players as well, because I did not have all the tools I needed at my disposal to handle all the logistics, but now that I know what I need, I’ll come much better prepared next time.

Special thanks to David West for suggesting the ladder format and working with Mattan Kamon to bring it to Concord-Carlisle Chess Club. Even though the logistics need somewhat different handling to go smoother and faster, this was an innovative new event that I definitely look forward to running again.

Winners:

Ladder:

1st – Arnaud Kohler

2nd – Dhairya Mehta

3rd – Ariel Zhou

Medals: Andrey Kalashnikov, Raeann Zhou, Bohan Wang

Watch your e-mails for the announcement of our next tournament. Have a great holiday season and see you over the board.
