Final Standings, Concord-Carlisle December Scholastic Ladder – 12-14-2019

Concord-Carlisle December Scholastic Ladder #5 – 12-14-2019

Bay State Chess Kings Facebook Group

Fellow Concord-Carlisle players,

We did a much better job advertising this Ladder event than the last one, and it paid off! Thanks to the 19 players who played enthusiastically and with excellent sportsmanship in this Ladder. It has taken about a year for me to get this format down successfully, and I am happy to say this was a smooth-running event with excellent participation. Thanks to David West for his exemplary help in getting this together. (A mini shout-out also to the custodian Cameron for assisting me with break-down at the end.)

I was pleased to have two of my students, Ziv Dudnik (a repeat from last month) and Antonio Feng join us from my class in Newton. Both of them will be on my Teams at the Winter Team Challenge in January.

We had an older new player, Uri Netzer, join us for his first tournament. Apparently he has some skill that needs to apply itself in future tournaments, because he went 3.5-0.5 and will (eventually) take home the 3rd Place Points Trophy.

Winners:

Ladder:

1st: Jayden Wu
2nd: Brandon Li
3rd: Gentry Thatcher

Points:

1st-2nd (tied): Stanley Yu, Yiheng Liu
3rd: Uri Netzer

Our next Ladder Tournament will be on LEAP DAY! 2/29/2020. See you over the board and have a great holiday.

Final Standings, Concord-Carlisle April Scholastic Ladder – 04-07-2019

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Scholastic players,

We wrapped up the 2018-2019 Scholastic season at Concord-Carlisle Chess Club with our 3rd Ladder. The number of players who participated went up to 22 players, up from 14 players in February. Thanks in abundance to David West of Carlisle who helped Concord-Carlisle Chess Club institute the Ladder Format for the first time anywhere in my tenure as TD. After a rather bumpy start, it has emerged a great success.

Special recognition to my two Newton students Max Zuckernik and Erik Shin who both got 2 Points. Although they did not place, they nonetheless saw both of their Ratings go up. I am proud of these two as representatives of our Newton chess classes at F.A. Day Middle School.

Final Standings Concord-Carlisle October Scholastic G/30 d5 – 10-14-2018

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Chess players,

For our inaugural 2018-2019 Scholastic tournament at our new location of Concord-Carlisle High School, we successfully fielded a squad of 33 players. This high number of players was enough to allow us to field an unplanned separate Section: U400. All qualifying players were given the option to transfer into this new Section, and eight chose to help create it.

The new location presented a few challenges with both space and timing, but overall appeared to work very well. It was an attractive site with plenty of space nearby the playing room both inside and outside the library.

Four of my students from Newton Community Education chess classes – Toby Harrison, Jacob Rubin, Max Zuckernik, and Erik Shin – were among the players, and Toby won first prize. I am pleased that NCE was so amply represented.

The final Standings are below my signature.  Photos are on the Bay State Chess Kings Facebook Group page, which I hope all of you will join.

Winners:

Over Age 11:

1st Place: Ryan Sun
2nd Place: Leonard Sweeney-Barrett
3rd Place: Holden Chalfant
Medal: Kaustubh Kislay

Age 11 & Under;

1st Place: Tobias Harrison
2nd Place: Annabel Kohler
3rd Place: Sabrina Li
Medals: Milan Castellino, Sarayu Mudundi

Under 400:

2nd Place: Malin Kuo
3rd Place: Eilam Kuo

We appreciate everyone’s support as we transferred our operations to the School, and we look forward to future Concord-Carlisle Tournaments.

Final Standings Concord-Carlisle June G/30 d5 – 06-10-2018

Fellow Concord-Carlisle Chess Players,

Great way to end the Concord-Carlisle academic season! Thanks to the 40 players who came in droves to make one of our most successful Concord-Carlisle events. I had the pleasure to meet David, the coach from Carlisle who came to visit. He may help us to collaborate between Concord and Carlsle Chess Clubs to make some even bigger and more diverse-ratiing events starting in late October.

Congratulations to Ashot who improved on his second-place finish last time to triumph this time with 3.5 points. Congratulations also to Shouri who is evidently ready, after his 3.5-point event today, to play some higher-ranked players in a hurry.

Winners:

Over Age 11 (>=800 Rating)

1st: Ashot Melkonyan

2nd-3rd (tied): Lucas Kamon (2nd trophy), Ian Van Hulle, Bryan Henroid

Age 11 & Under (<800 Rating)

1st-2nd (tied): Shouri Mosaliganti (1st trophy), Dattasai Kilari

3rd (tied): Ariel Zhou (trophy), Chirag Katragadda, Teo Beckwith, Jayden Wu, Raymond Vasile

Look for our next tournament in late October. Have a great summer and we’ll see you again over the board.

Nicholas P. Sterling, Ph.D.
